As of the census of 2000, there were 31,575 people, 11,610 households, and 8,208 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,643.0/km˛ (4,256.2/mi˛). There were 12,051 housing units at an average density of 627.1/km˛ (1,624.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city was 83.04% White, 1.52% African American, 1.14% Native American, 3.07% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, 8.13% from other races, and 2.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.27% of the population.

There were 11,610 households out of which 33.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.6% were married couples living together, 11.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% were non-families. 23.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.19.
